Book Review~ All the Ugly and Wonderful Things by Bryn Greenwood
Completely and utterly consumed me!
I fell in love with these two characters completely, while I should have felt more outrage, more uncomfortable, I didn’t at all. This is Wavy and Kellen’s story of how something beautiful can come out of some life’s harshest realities. Wavy’s mother was a WACKO, druggie and her father Liam (who hated her) was a drug dealer. Kellen is part of the crew for Liam and he meets 8yr old Wavy in an unexpected way. Kellen isn’t your typical hero, he isn’t drop dead sexy, 6 pack, rich or even truly hygienic. It was also said he was a “little slow”. He felt for this little girl that was being neglected, emotionally abused, a mother to her baby brother and basically starved. He stepped in all roles for Wavy and Donal, brother, father and friend, someone she could truly count on. He was her hero in all ways! I won’t go into their journey more, it needs to be experienced to be truly felt as the author intended.
Wavy and Kellen’s story was told in multiple POV’s which for me can make or break a book. This case it gave you more insight into the story and especially how they were perceived by others around them. The writing was breathtaking, moving and will stay with me forever, although it might not be for everyone.
